My start cord on my push/gas mower won't budge at all (briggs/stratton engine). How to fix it?
I just cleaned out the air filter, spark plug and the carburetor and gave my lawn mower a nice cleaning. I was about half way done with my yard and I hit a large rock ...the mower stopped and now the pull cord won't pull at all. I am going to fix it myself, any ideas of where to start ?
Answer:
If you bent the crank shaft then the mower needs trashed. I have a theory that I must ask however...After running over this rock did you turn the mower on it's side or end, especially with the spark plug end pointing down to check and see if anything was tangled in the blade ? If so the crank may not be bent(blade is attached to the crank shaft) but you may have simply filled the cylinder with oil from leaning it.If so simply pull the spark plug out and pull the pull rope about 10 or 15 times to expell all of the oil out of the cylinder..the cylinder will fill up with oil, and will not let you pull the rope to this.By removing the spark plug and pulling the rope multiple times it will expell all of the oil that got into the cylinder. Now recheck your oil level and refill if necessary...dip the spark plug in some gasoline and put it back in..Crank the mower up..It will smoke and I mean alot untill it it burns all of the left over oil residue out of the cylinder..then run perfectly..If the rope does not pull AFTER you have removed the spark plug..then the crankshaft is definately bent...It is cheaper to buy a new mower than to take to a mower shop and have them replace the crank...pull the plug..see if the rope will then pull
