Everything You Should Know About Setting Up A Saltwater Aquarium
What are you planning to keep in your saltwater tank? Are you setting up a fish only tank? Or are you torn between a fish with live rock and a full-blast reef tanks? Whichever you choose, you must keep in mind that almost all saltwater tanks require protein skimmers, pumps, trickle filters, heaters or chillers and aquarium lights.
Marine Tank Equipment
Protein Skimmers are essential especially in tanks that keep coral reefs. They remove excess protein wastes from aquariums, thus preventing the formation of too much Nitrate and algae blooms. If you want to keep your aquarium free from unwanted protein substances, you must include a protein skimmer on your list. There are several brands of this in the market. One particular brand is the Coralife Super Skimmer.
Like protein skimmers, trickle filters also help in keeping the water in the aquarium clean. They remove the water from the tank through an overflow, and then filter it and pump the water back into the tank. Trickle filters require water pumps to move the water, so make sure that you have a water pump, too. The good thing is, you will not need trickle filters and protein skimmers if you are setting up a tank with reefs. The reefs will be enough to keep the aquarium's system in balance.
Heaters and chillers are important to keep the water in the right temperature. The three types of aquarium heaters/chillers are hanging, submersible and substrate.
Aquarium lights are crucial for marine tanks, especially those that have corals or anemones. You will need the right lighting for certain plants or animals to photosynthesize. Generally, extremely deep coral tanks require a combination of 10,000'K HQI, actinic and lunar LED aquarium lights. These special lights provide natural dusk to nighttime light cycles. Brands like Coralife Lights have these special lighting fixtures. All the mentioned equipment are generally available in pet stores and hobby shops.
