Manual Arbor Presses - ToolsRUs
Very useful for performing relatively small tasks such as riveting, staking and installing or removing bearings, arbor presses are hand-operated tools that generate an incredible amount of force. Like all presses, a ram is used to apply the force. The heavy-duty ram is oriented vertically and moved by means of a rotating lever. Arbor presses are vital tools in machine shops and elsewhere. The press is generally bolted to a work bench, for it is much smaller than related tools like a hydraulic press. They are used for small-scale production or assembly work.
Weighing up to 100 pounds or more, this type of press is made of forged and cast metal. The vertically positioned ram or rack typically features a rounded or square flat bottom. The press consists of four basic parts: the body, the handle assembly, the plate and the rack. The body shape will vary from press to press, but it is usually made of cast metal and includes a foundation with bolt holes to attach to a work bench. The handle assembly and rack attach to the upper portion of the body, while the removable plate mounts on its foundation.
The part that does the actual pressing is the rack, the vertically moving component. On one side of the rack are teeth that allow the internal gears to grab it and bring it down upon the plate as the handle is turned. With relative ease, an operator turns the handle as the rack applies up to several tonnes of force onto a piece of metal. Depending on the arbor press, it may generate anywhere from one to five tonnes of force. Some of the tasks for which an arbor press is best suited include flattening, stamping, bearing removal, shaping or small-scale metal repair.

You can adjust the leverage ratio of the press according to how much force is required for a particular job. To gain the most leverage, you simply loosen the locknut and extend the handle all the way to one side of the gear. By contrast, the least amount of leverage is gained with the ends of the handle equidistant from the center gear of the assembly. It is easier to apply a greater amount of force the more leverage you have.
